Easier and more convenient

We’re all familiar with handing over copies of our ID documents. It can be for a rental, registering for a new phone plan or getting a job. We’re regularly sharing or showing copies of our ID documents. A Digital ID is an online method of confirming your ID that does not require physical documents once it’s set up.

With your consent, Digital ID allows you to verify your existing ID documents online against the official record held by various government agencies. This means you won’t need to post, upload or email certified copies of your ID documents to prove who you are online.

Safeguarding your privacy

Privacy and security protection is built into the Australian Government Digital ID System. Accredited Digital ID providers must follow strict privacy safeguards:

  • - A Digital ID cannot be used to track individuals or their activities across different services or for general surveillance of people via their Digital ID.
  • - Consent is required for the collection and disclosure of personal information.
  • - Providers must ensure any other data is stored, transmitted and disposed of securely.
